APPROACH AND MATERIAL

Painting through observation and color.

For Alexander, a portrait begins with the structure of the face. Proportion, expression and the movement of light establish a convincing foundation. Those decisions remain important even when the surrounding composition becomes abstract.

His studio process often begins with an acrylic foundation, followed by oil painting and selective detail. Transparent paint, textured surfaces and selective highlights give form to the subject, while abstract passages retain their own character.

The collection also reflects an interest in architecture and the everyday character of New York streets. Each subject calls for a different balance of realism and invention, allowing the work to develop without being confined to a single style.
